Africa Visa Requirements: The Complete 2025 Guide

Which African countries can you enter without a visa? Where can you get a visa on arrival? And which require advance applications? Complete breakdown for all 54 countries.

10 July 2025

The Four Visa Categories

African countries fall into four broad categories for most Western passport holders (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada). Your exact requirements depend on your passport โ€” always verify with the official embassy or government website before travel.

The four categories: Visa-free (no document needed), Visa on arrival (get a stamp at the airport), e-Visa (apply online before travelling), and Visa required (apply at an embassy in advance).

Visa-Free Countries

These countries admit most Western passport holders without any visa โ€” simply show your passport on arrival:

  • Morocco โ€” 90 days visa-free for most nationalities
  • Tunisia โ€” visa-free for many EU, US, and UK citizens
  • South Africa โ€” visa-free for most Western passports (90 days)
  • Botswana โ€” visa-free (90 days)
  • Namibia โ€” visa-free (90 days)
  • Seychelles โ€” visa-free for all nationalities (30 days, extendable)
  • Mauritius โ€” visa-free (up to 90 days)
  • Senegal โ€” visa-free for many nationalities (90 days)
  • Gambia โ€” visa-free for many nationalities (90 days)
  • Eswatini โ€” visa-free for most
  • Lesotho โ€” visa-free for most
  • Ghana โ€” e-Visa available but many nationalities can also get visa on arrival

Visa on Arrival Countries

These countries issue a visa at the airport or border. Fees typically range from $25โ€“100. Always have USD cash as card machines can be unreliable:

  • Egypt โ€” e-Visa on arrival ($25), or get the e-Visa online in advance (recommended)
  • Kenya โ€” e-Visa required; apply online at etakenya.go.ke before travel
  • Tanzania โ€” e-Visa required in advance OR visa on arrival ($50)
  • Uganda โ€” e-Visa required; apply at visas.immigration.go.ug
  • Rwanda โ€” visa on arrival available ($30); e-Visa recommended
  • Mozambique โ€” visa on arrival ($50โ€“80)
  • Malawi โ€” visa on arrival ($75)
  • Zambia โ€” KAZA UniVisa on arrival covers Zambia and Zimbabwe ($50)
  • Zimbabwe โ€” KAZA UniVisa covers Zimbabwe and Zambia ($50)
  • Madagascar โ€” visa on arrival (โ‚ฌ30โ€“40)
  • Comoros โ€” visa on arrival
  • Djibouti โ€” visa on arrival ($50)
  • Burundi โ€” visa on arrival
  • Somalia โ€” visa on arrival (not recommended for leisure travel)

e-Visa Countries (Apply Online Before Travelling)

These countries require an e-Visa obtained through an official government portal before you travel. Processing typically takes 2โ€“5 business days:

  • Ethiopia โ€” e-Visa at evisa.ethiopia.gov.et ($50, 30 days)
  • Kenya โ€” mandatory ETA at etakenya.go.ke ($30)
  • Tanzania โ€” e-Visa at eservices.immigration.go.tz ($50)
  • Cape Verde โ€” EASE travel authorisation (free)
  • Gabon โ€” e-Visa available online
  • Ghana โ€” e-Visa at evisagh.com ($50โ€“150 depending on nationality)
  • Nigeria โ€” e-Visa for many nationalities ($100โ€“160)
  • Cameroon โ€” e-Visa at evisacameroon.com

Countries Requiring a Pre-Arranged Visa

These countries require you to apply at an embassy before arrival. Lead times range from 1โ€“4 weeks:

  • Algeria โ€” visa required for most Western passports; apply at Algerian embassy
  • Libya โ€” visa required; very difficult to obtain for tourists
  • Sudan โ€” visa required; apply in advance
  • Chad โ€” visa required
  • Niger โ€” visa required
  • Mali โ€” visa required
  • Guinea โ€” visa required
  • Equatorial Guinea โ€” visa required; one of the most difficult in Africa
  • DR Congo โ€” visa required; apply well in advance ($105)
  • Eritrea โ€” visa required; notoriously difficult to obtain
  • Angola โ€” e-Visa now available for some nationalities (recent change โ€” verify)

The East Africa Tourist Visa

The East Africa Tourist Visa is one of travel's great practical innovations: a single $100 visa that covers Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda in a single trip. This makes the classic East Africa circuit (Nairobi โ†’ Masai Mara โ†’ Kigali โ†’ gorillas โ†’ Kampala โ†’ Bwindi) dramatically simpler.

Apply at any of the three countries' immigration portals. The visa allows multiple entries between the three countries for 90 days. Note: Tanzania is not included.

โœฆ $100 for Kenya + Uganda + Rwandaโœฆ 90 days, multiple entries between the threeโœฆ Apply at any of the three countries' e-Visa portalsโœฆ Tanzania NOT included โ€” requires separate visa

Yellow Fever Certificate

Many African countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination regardless of your passport. This is especially important in:

โ€” West Africa (Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria, etc.) โ€” required for entry and for onward travel โ€” East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda) โ€” required if arriving from a yellow fever risk country โ€” Central Africa โ€” widely required

Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel and carry the International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) at all times. Some countries will deny entry without it, regardless of visa status.

โœฆ Required for entry to most of West and Central Africaโœฆ Must be vaccinated 10+ days before travelโœฆ Carry the physical yellow cardโœฆ Check the CDC or your government's travel health site

Practical Tips

Before any African trip:

  • Check the official embassy website for your specific passport โ€” rules change frequently
  • Apply for e-Visas at least 2 weeks before travel to allow processing time
  • Carry USD cash for visa-on-arrival fees โ€” card machines often don't work
  • Have a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date
  • Check blank passport pages โ€” some countries require 2 or 3 blank pages
  • Print all visa confirmations; don't rely on having phone signal at borders
  • Travel insurance is not a visa requirement but is strongly advised
